A Place Speaks To You

2023 / Forthcoming audio-visual installation

A Place Speaks to You aims to give a "voice" to locations that are not linguistically intelligible in the traditional sense, thereby bridging people and places, human and nature.

Specifically, I'm building a text-to-speech digital tool that will translate written input into the interpreted ‘language’ of a physical place, created using audio field recordings. The result: imagine a poem recited to you by the voice of your favourite national park. Or a treaty read to you by a lake. My vision is to make the viewer feel a sense of kinship or intimacy to physical place, and to spark momentum in advocacy-over-ownership of the environment. What we choose to translate is poignant, raising questions of agency, colonialism and relationships to the land.
